A Container Garden for Mom

A mixed container garden planted by you will make your mom or your aunt or your grandma (or anyone at all!) so happy and being creative with your hands in the soil feels pretty great for you.  Here are some tips and ideas for making something unforgettable for the mom you love!

Find a pot in your garage or select a new pot with holes in the bottom for drainage (we have some great pots in all shapes, sizes and designs) and decide what color scheme would make mom’s day.  Think about where your mom will put it and what colors would match or contrast with that part of the patio or other plants in that area.  Spring is a beautiful time for yellows and purples, or perhaps consider the symbolism of colors when you plan her garden.

We like to think about fillers, spillers, and thrillers when designing a container garden for impact.  The thriller is the eye-catcher that stands tall; the filler is the prolific grower that will cover the soil and make a statement below the thriller; and the spiller will cascade over the side of the pot and dazzle.

As for specific plants, pinks and reds mean Love and there are so many gorgeous, easy-care flowers in these colors.  Pinks and reds look great with yellows, and with glossy green leaves.  Certain plants are highly resilient (lantana, euphorbia, purslane) and maybe that reminds you of your mom.  Maybe mom always loved geraniums and you want to plant a few different types because they’re her favorite.  Maybe mom loves to sit outside and enjoy nature and the peace of birds and butterflies so you want to add some plants they love to your arrangement (pentas, powderpuff, beauty berry).  Maybe mom makes the most incredible spaghetti with homemade sauce and you want to encourage her to invite you over for it so you plant her the perfect Italian blend of herbs (marjoram, oregano, basil).  It is all about mom, and there is an inspiring answer for every type of mom!  Ask us for ideas and we will set you up to impress!

How about designing a Refreshment Garden in a container for an aunt or a sister? Perhaps a fragrant mix of Mints if she likes happy hour or a blend of lemon balm, spearmint, and rosemary if she prefers making tea?
