Time to plant your veggies!

September 25, 2012

Hi Everyone! My name is Jennifer and I’m one of the most recent people who has been added to this amazing team at Pinder’s Nursery. I will be handling the content of the web site, blog, Facebook, classes and email newsletters. I’m looking forward to expanding my plant horizon’s and sharing my experiences with you! Terri will still be popping in from time to time to share key things certain times of year, especially those tied to the moon as she is our resident moon goddess 🙂

It’s finally fall and the perfect time to get back into your garden and plant some veggies, herbs, and beautiful plants to enhance the color of your garden. Check out my container garden featured in the photo.

my newly planted Vegetable Garden

I have garlic chives, red onion, cucumber, beans, zucchini  tasty purple carrots, rosemary, blue basil (to help have the bee’s come and do the pollination for me), my lettuce bowl from the Dirt to Plate class I attended and of course tomato’s! I wanted to share my photo as I am a newbie to gardening and will be exploring things along the way and look forward to your feedback. I will make sure to take more photo’s as my plants grow more and start giving me those yummy veggies I am anxious to try.

On my first attempt at my veg garden my rookie move was to plant my seeds right before summer.. then the baby plants into my containers a few weeks after that. I was SSOOO excited when I saw the seeds growing in my containers inside the house.. but alas they did not thrive once planted outside. Why? well because we are in Florida and it’s H.O.T! and the seed packet was not a person telling me to wait until Fall because I’m in the south.

One of my first things I wanted to make sure I did here at my new job was take advantage of the wonderful classes we have available. So last Saturday I attended the Dirt to Plate class which teaches you not only the variety of ways you can have a garden here in Florida, but also the special things to do to help it thrive. Our soil is not ideal, so we have to help it out. Marvin talked about soil amendment, how to water, pest control, fertilizers etc.. it was very informative. I was able to take that info (along with purchases of new supplies) home and make a go at my 2nd attempt at growing my own veggies. Finger’s crossed it all will go swimmingly.. just need to make sure I weed, keep an eye out for dirty pests, and water correctly.

On that note of water … did you know you should water early in the morning if you have a container garden? Why? well.. that’s a GREAT question! It’s because you want your plants to have water to drink during the day and by the end of the day it will be dried out. This allows the cooler night to be a haven from the sun but also so the water will not stay in the bottom of the soil and possibly rot your plants roots if they are in a container.. which I have had happen to 2 plants over the summer! BAH! So lesson learned 🙂

Make sure you check out our upcoming October classes here http://pindersnursery.com/upcoming-events/ and get registered. I should be at quite a few of them as I need to learn as much as I can to talk to all of you about life here at the garden center.

Let me know things you would like me to talk about as I’m here for you!

Have a blissful day
