We Love Lettuce

Let—us help build your dream vegetable garden!

Cooler temperatures mean your veggies are ready to take off!  Lettuce is one of the quickest, 3 to 4 weeks after planting and you’ll be picking fresh greens for some of the best salads you’ve ever made when you plant Starters.  Planting from Seeds will add 3 to 4 weeks to the crop time.

Leaf Lettuce is the type to grow, as it offers the most nutrition!  The leaves can be picked before the whole plant is mature. Cut and Come Again, as it is often called.  Dark-leaf varieties are typically more heat tolerant and should be planted in the warmer months, like September and March through April, but can also be planted now and through February. Lettuce wants to be kept moist at all times, drying down too many times can cause the leaves to become bitter (no, thank you!) Plants that begin to flower (when the stalk comes from the center) will also turn bitter.

Caterpillars are the lettuce gardeners worst enemy and can be controlled with an organic product called BT (Bacillus thuringiensis is a natural bacteria that makes pests sick when they eat it).  Neem, also organic, will manage most other issues. Both of these can be sprayed on, either in the morning or late in the afternoon, but should be sprayed on separate days.

The secret to success is to plant, water, fertilize, and eat. Lettuce is one of the easiest, but also the quickest, so be sure to use yours.

Varieties we have ready now are:

Tropicana—Heat-tolerant and a very heavy leaf (green)

Romaine—-Green large leaves

Salad Bowl Red— Red frilly leaves

Buttercrunch—– Green leaves with a buttery flavor

And our heirlooms!

We select and grow all our vegetables, herbs, and flowers at our nursery.  Our vegetables, including Tomatoes, are organically grown this year.  We’re excited to see you become the vegetable gardener you want to be, please let us know what we can do to help you succeed!
