A Resolution to Garden (for our health!)

December 31, 2015

In addition to excellent exercise, check out these other amazing benefits that gardening offers us!

Mental health: A study by Texas A & M and University of Texas shows that people who garden score higher on how they rate their “zest for life.” Tending to a garden gives us something to nurture and watch grow and then often rewards us with flowers and food.

Bone health: The University of Arkansas concludes from their study that women who garden have lower rates of osteoporosis than joggers, swimmers, and women who do aerobics.

Lower risk of diabetes: Exercise and eating right are two major combatants of this prevalent disease. Gardening for 150 minutes per week can greatly reduce your chance of developing this disease, especially if you grow your own vegetables. The health benefits of fresh, chemical-free vegetables are numerous.

Stress relief: We are constantly bombarded with things that fill our attention to the maximum: phone calls, e-mails, and deadlines and obligations. “Unplugging” for even a few minutes a day to pick some weeds, plant flowers, or harvest fresh produce can do wonders to clear our minds and bring us back on track.

Even small-scale gardening like planting a potted herb garden, or adding a few orchids to the trees in your yard can improve your health and well-being!  We love to see new gardeners start off small so they can manage their projects and see the rewards, and not just the work, right away. Gardening is equitable, beneficial, and so very enjoyable!

Here’s to your health and your garden!
